Oaky Creek No. 1 Underground Colliery began its longwall operations in July 1990. The underground was officially opened by Resources Minister, Ken Vaughn, on 12 October, 1990 and the total workforce numbered 585.
Highwall augering to recover coal from the open cut highwalls prior to subsidence following underground mining commenced in 1992. The contractor operated Alliance low seam longwall operations west of Oaky No 1 began in 1997, with Oaky North underground commencing production in February 1999.
The Alliance colliery was sealed in 2002, Xstrata purchased MIM in 2003 and the open cut operations were closed in 2006.
