Tieri was built to become home for the Oaky Creek Coal mine employees and their families. It celebrated its quarter century in 2008. Tieri residents, both old and new, are proud of the vibrant and strong community they have developed and continue to develop.

There are a variety of sporting clubs to enjoy, such as Cricket, Golf, Swimming, Tae Kwon Do, Tennis, Bowls, Rugby League and Squash. Other clubs and groups include a Dance Academy, Theatre group, Arts and Crafts, Guides and Lions.

The Tieri Kindergarten, Prep-Centre, Primary School and Capella High School engage and educate Tieri’s children to Year 12.

The Shopping Centre forecourt was redeveloped in 2007. The Centre boasts a Supermarket, Bakery, Electrical Store, Café, Bank, Credit Union, Newsagency, Hair Salon and Post Office. A Physiotherapy practice adjoins the Oaky Creek Coal Town Services Office and the Doctor’s surgery is located in Talagai Street.

Lions Park has BBQs and a playground for the children. There are churches, a hotel/motel, service station and skate park. The library has meeting facilities. Tieri is part of the Central Highlands Regional Council area. The Council’s Tieri Town Office is located within the Library building.

Many of Tieri’s past residents returned to the town to join in the 21st birthday celebrations held in August 2004. The inaugural Billy Cart Derby was run. A Show and Shine for lovers of both two and four wheeled automobiles, mine tours, a photographic display, construction of the Memories Brick Wall, a rock concert featuring the Choirboys and Infusion and many other popular events were staged.

Oaky Creek Coal’s Oaky 1 and Oaky North underground collieries are in full production and both have long life of mine plans and exploration continues to identify other financially viable deposits around the existing infrastructure. Open cut operations have been completed.

Oaky Creek Waste Coal Mine Gas Power Station operates on waste coal mine gas from Oaky 1 and Oaky North and is located between these mines in a subsidence free area.
